Chiraq – Murdered the First Quarter

From the ChicagoTribune, “Chicago off to deadliest start in nearly two decades“.

As the first quarter of 2016 nears an end, violence in Chicago has reached levels unseen in years, putting the city on course to top 500 homicides for only the second time since 2008.

As of 6 a.m. Wednesday, homicides totaled 135, a 71 percent jump over the 79 killings in the same year-earlier period, official Police Department statistics show. That represented the worst first quarter of a year since 136 homicides in 1999, according to the data.

Shootings have jumped by comparable numbers as well. As of Wednesday, at Chiraq_Homicide_Mugleast 727 people had been shot in Chicago so far this year, a 73 percent rise from 422 a year earlier, according to a Tribune analysis of department data.

Worse yet, that jump follows two consecutive years in which shootings rose by double digits, the analysis found. Homicides also rose by about 12.5 percent last year over 2014.

Chiraq – Bullet Cams

From the Onion, “Chicago Police Department To Monitor All Interactions With Public Using New Bullet Cams“.

CHICAGO—In response to calls for increased transparency and accountability, the Chicago Police Department announced Friday that it will begin monitoring Guns_Chiraqall interactions with the public by using new bullet cams. “To ensure that all contact between law enforcement officers and residents is properly documented, five megapixel, high-definition cameras will be affixed to our standard-grade 9mm Luger caliber ammunition,” said Chicago Police Department Interim Superintendent John Escalante, adding that the bullet cams will capture the majority of public interactions and store them in a database.

Motor City Blues

How long have the Democrats been in charge of Detroit?  Answer:  Since 1962.  It’s no coincidence, then, these results reflect what one can expect from Democratic Party rule.

From, “Detroit Public Schools: 93% Not Proficient in Reading; 96% Not Proficient in Math.”

( – In the Detroit public school district, 96 percent of eighth graders are not proficient in mathematics and 93 percent are not proficient in reading.

Detroit_Street_Art_No_YuppiesThat is according to the results of the 2015 National Assessment of Educational Progress tests published by the Department of Education’s National Center for Educational Statistics.

Only 4 percent of Detroit public school eighth graders are proficient or better in math and only 7 percent in reading. This is despite the fact that in the 2011-2012 school year—the latest for which the Department of Education has reported the financial data—the Detroit public schools had “total expenditures” of $18,361 per student and “current expenditures” of $13,330 per student.

According to data published by the Detroit Public Schools, the school district’s operating expenses in the fiscal year that ended on June 30, 2014 amounted to approximately $14,743 per student.

Now out on the “Left Coast”, The Press Democrat has this tidbit that might help Detroit solve its little grading problem, “Rohnert Park, Cotati schools rethink grading scale“.  Just change to scale.

A new grading scale that redefines what constitutes an “A” or an “F” is causing strife and confusion in the Cotati-Detroit_Abandoned_BuildingRohnert Park school district. Some teachers and officials say it lowers the bar for student success, while others say it encourages students to succeed.

The new system is called the equal interval scale. Essentially, it makes it harder to get a failing grade. It departs from the traditional A to F scale in which students receive F’s for scores below 59 percent. Instead, the scale awards F’s only for scores below 20 percent.
